The University of Basra is organizing a seminar on the reasons why the Gulf of Fandi has the highest tides

The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a training course titled “The Reasons Behind the World's Highest Tides in the Gulf of Fandi.”

The course aimed to enable participants to understand the complex natural phenomena that lead to the world's highest tides in the Gulf of Fandi, by linking astronomy, physical geography, and physics.

The course, taught by lecturer Faiz Younis Khalil and Dr. Adel Jassim Mohammed,

included an explanation of the relationship between the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun and the phenomenon of tides in general. It also analyzed the main reason behind the amplified tides in the Gulf of Fendi, focusing on the concepts of the bay’s “resonance” and “trumpet shape.” It also compared the Bay of Fundy with other regions of the world in terms of tidal range and assessed the environmental and economic significance (such as clean energy) of this unique phenomenon. Furthermore, it clarified the impact of future variables (such as climate change) on the intensity of this phenomenon.
