Basra University organizes a course on radiation protection

The Marine Science Center at the University of Basra organized a scientific course entitled “Daily Prevention of Exposure to Radiation Doses at Levels That May Cause Cancer.”

The course aimed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to reduce unnecessary exposure to low and chronic doses of radioactive materials, with the aim of protecting public health and reducing the risk of cancer.

The course, lectured by Prof. Huda Rayhan Al-Kim, included an explanation of how low and continuous doses of radiation can cause DNA damage and increase the risk of cancer later on, and taught how to apply the basic principles of radiation protection: time, distance, and shielding.

and training participants on the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, aprons, protective clothing, and protective masks. Emphasis was placed on developing plans for dealing with accidental exposure to radiation and how to report it. Participants were also taught how to monitor and control exposure levels for occupationally exposed individuals (e.g., measuring annual dose). Understand how to safely handle radioactive materials in work environments (medical, industrial, oil and gas exploration).
