The Sedimentology and Marine Sediments Department at the Marine Science Center is organizing a scientific field trip to Mount Sinam

The Sedimentology and Marine Sediments Department at the Marine Science Center of the University of Basra organized a scientific field trip to Mount Sanam, located in the Safwan district south of Basra province. The delegation included a select group of specialists from the department, with the aim of conducting a field study of the unique geological characteristics of this natural landmark.

The researchers explained that the mountain is a geological icon in the middle of a flat area devoid of terrain.

and is a natural extension of the series of salt domes scattered across the bottom of the Arabian Gulf, making it an open field laboratory for studying the geological evolution of the region. The rocks, which are more than five kilometers deep, appear on the surface as evaporite rocks (mainly gypsum, anhydrite, and limestone) that are an extension of the Hormuz salt formations found in the Arabian Gulf region.

The scientific delegation made positive observations regarding the paving of the roads leading to the mountain, which facilitates access to the site for researchers and visitors compared to previous years.

At the end of the visit, the Marine Science Center joined government, academic, and community voices calling for greater attention and conversion to a national geopark to protect its landmarks from human encroachment or the damage that has been observed, as well as the possibility of recreational development through the provision of basic services and tourist facilities.

This visit is part of the Marine Science Center's scientific approach to promoting field research and linking the academic side with the social and environmental reality in the region.
