Basra University organizes a course on the prevalence of genital herpes among women in Basra province

The Marine Science Center at the University of Basra organized an awareness course entitled The Concept of Genital Mycoplasmas in Women

The course aimed to educate women about this sexually transmitted infection, which often has no symptoms but can cause serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and premature birth, with a focus on accurate diagnosis (such as NAAT tests) and effective treatment to combat antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

The course included a lecture by Dr. Reham Mohamed Mostafa

on the concept of genital mycoplasmas

as “superbugs” that cause serious reproductive health problems in women. She also discussed how to diagnose infection using modern techniques (NAAT) from cervical swabs, and determined the need for testing even in the absence of symptoms, especially in cases of cervicitis or pelvic inflammation. She highlighted its association with cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Premature birth and low birth weight.

Dr. Reham reviewed antibiotic treatment options and referred patients to treat their sexual partners.

She also promoted awareness of the importance of regular screening, especially for those with risk factors, and reducing the spread of infection.
