The Marine Science Center at the University of Basra organized a course entitled “International Environmental Agreements.”
The course aimed to build participants' capacity to understand the international legal framework for environmental protection, with a focus on key agreements such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The course, which was taught by Dr. Mahmoud Shaker Hashim, a lecturer at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra, introduced participants to the concept that
international environmental agreements are legally binding treaties between countries to address common environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity conservation. It included notable examples such as the Paris Agreement, the Montreal Protocol (ozone), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the conventions on hazardous substances (Basel, Rotterdam, Minamata), all of which coordinate cross-border efforts and establish frameworks for international cooperation to protect natural resources and the environmental future of humanity.
She also highlighted how these global commitments are translated into practical policies and practices at the local and regional levels, and the role of the media in shaping public awareness of these vital issues.
