University of Basra organizes a workshop on the petroleum system

The Marine Science Center at the University of Basra organized a workshop on the petroleum system.

The workshop aimed to understand: where oil and gas are located, the potential quantities of oil and gas in a given area, and the best methods for extracting oil and gas.

In general, the petroleum system is an essential tool in oil and gas exploration and production, as it helps identify potential reservoirs and evaluate investment opportunities in various oil and gas fields.

The workshop, presented by Dr. Rafid Nouri Rajab from the Department of Sedimentology and Marine Biology, included an introduction to the petroleum system. The petroleum system is a fundamental concept in petroleum geology that describes the set of processes and interacting elements that lead to the formation and accumulation of oil and gas. This concept brings together various aspects of hydrocarbon formation, from source rocks to oil and gas reservoirs.

The workshop addressed the main components of the petroleum system:

source rocks, reservoir rocks, seal rocks, migration pathways, and traps.

It also addressed the main processes in the petroleum system: generation, migration, accumulation, and capture.
