For sustainable development and biodiversity conservation, a University of Basra lecturer participates in the Fifth Baghdad International Water Conference

Ahmed Jasib Jabbar, a lecturer at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra, participated in the Fifth Baghdad International Water Conference, held by the Ministry of Water Resources from May 24-26, 2025, in Baghdad.
The participation included presenting a paper entitled:
Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity in Iraq
The Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity in Iraq
The current study included data collection from January 2021 to December 2022 in Iraqi marine waters. Three environmental factors were studied: pH, water temperature, and salinity. Several mangrove trees were planted on the shores of Khor al-Zubair to prevent soil erosion and increase oxygen production, relying on previous studies from 1991 to 2020.
The current study observed a positive correlation between environmental factors such as temperature and salinity and jellyfish and benthic fauna. The impact of climate change on biodiversity, represented by fish, snails, sharks, eels, jellyfish, and benthic fauna, was clearly evident, with their decline in recent years.
The study aimed to identify the effects of climate change on biodiversity and the impact of human factors.
