Two lecturers at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah, Dr. Ammar Yasser Jassim and Dr. Amir Abbas Mohammed, in collaboration with international researchers, published a peer-reviewed article titled "Addressing the Global Challenge of Bacterial Drug Resistance: Insights, Strategies, and Future Directions" in Frontiers in Microbiology, Antimicrobials, Resistance and Chemotherapy, published by Frontiers Publishing, Switzerland. The journal is the most highly cited journal in microbiology and explores pioneering research in the field of antimicrobials, antibiotic resistance, antibiotic therapy, and mobile genetic elements. The article, published in Scopus 2Q with an impact factor of (4), addresses the role of antibiotics in social and economic growth by enhancing healthcare. However, their misuse has led to increased bacterial resistance, treatment failure, and rising healthcare costs. Despite a global decline in antibiotic consumption, overall use remains high, highlighting the need for strict regulations and preventative measures—especially in low- and middle-income countries. This article examines how environments such as farms, hospitals, and sewage facilities contribute to the spread of resistance and explores potential solutions such as dietary changes, probiotics, combination therapies, and innovative treatments such as tailored antibiotics, antibodies, vaccines, and nanoparticles. It also identifies gaps in our understanding of the role of gut microbes in regulating antibiotic resistance, emphasizing that strong policy interventions are necessary to mitigate this growing public health challenge.
