University of Basra Publishes Research Article in a Journal Indexed by Scopus and Clarivate
Dr. Ammar Yasser Jassim, a faculty member at the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra, has published a rigorous scientific paper titled
“Optimization of polyhydroxyalkanoate biopolymer production from lignocellulosic wood waste using statistical experimental designs”
in the journal “Scientific Reports,” published by Springer Nature.
The journal is ranked in the first quartile (Q1) with an impact factor of 3.9 in Scopus and Clarivate.
The journal publishes research in various scientific fields and disciplines, such as public health, biology, biochemistry, environmental science, and the sustainable use of natural resources.
The study examined the use of biodegradable alternatives to plastic pollution, which results from the continued presence of conventional polymers and represents a critical environmental challenge.

Therefore, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a promising solution, as they are naturally produced by microorganisms under nutrient-deprived conditions. The study therefore highlighted the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates using wood waste as a viable, low-cost feedstock and an economical carbon source for the synthesis of biopolymers, thereby promoting the production of sustainable biopolymers while advancing bioeconomy practices under a circular economy framework.
