University of Basra Faculty Member Publishes Research Article in a Scopus-Indexed Journal
Dr. Manaf Qasim Jaber, a faculty member at the Center for Marine Sciences at the University of Basra, along with other researchers, published a scientific paper titled
“Radon-based fault detection in marine sediments of Khor Abdullah: Integrating geophysical and statistical approaches”
in the journal
Physics and Chemistry of the Earth,
which focuses on diverse studies addressing nature and its significance in modern scientific thought and design. These studies have revealed the rich diversity of the natural world. Environmental dynamics, in particular, aim to link ecological systems with evolutionary thermodynamics in an effort to arrive at satisfactory solutions for sustainable development.
The journal is indexed in Scopus Q1 with an impact factor of 4.6
and is published by the international Dutch publisher ELSEVIER.
The significance of this study lies in the fact that, for the first time within a research framework, it combines radiometric evidence from radioactive isotopes with geological evidence in the Iraqi marine environment.
Radon gas (Rn-222) concentrations were measured using solid nuclear track detectors (such as 39-CR) and geophysical evidence in the Iraqi marine environment to detect hidden faults in the marine sediments of the Khor Abdullah region.
The study is considered a cost-effective and rapid tool for mapping hidden subsurface structures obscured by thick Quaternary strata, thereby supporting hydrocarbon exploration, the assessment of modern tectonic risks,
and the planning of coastal infrastructure in the northern Arabian Gulf.
