University of Basra Organizes Workshop on Landscape Architecture and Afforestation

The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a workshop titled “Landscape Architecture and Afforestation” ... Professional Responsibility Toward a Better Environment

The workshop aimed to reinforce the concept that the planning and implementation of landscape architecture and afforestation projects are not limited to aesthetic considerations alone, but rather constitute a professional and ethical responsibility aimed at achieving true environmental sustainability, combating pollution, adapting to climate change, and improving the quality of life in urban communities.

The workshop covered several topics. The first session, presented by Dr. Abdul-Kazim Nasser Salih from the College of Agriculture at the University of Basra, focused on the fundamentals and practical principles of garden design and the elements that enhance it.

The second session, on green roof cultivation, was presented by Dr. Mahmoud Shaker Hashim, and the third session, on the importance of afforestation in mitigating climate change, was presented by Dr. Ahmed Youssef Laftah.

The workshop recommended co-design and design based on scientific and ecological principles, as well as site analysis, since the project requires an understanding of the soil and local environment to select appropriate species and focus on the growth and development of trees over time, so that parks are treated as living, changing systems rather than static elements, adapt to climate change, and rely on scientific evidence to bridge the gap between design and maintenance, and develop a multi-year plan that includes successive stages of planting and follow-up care to ensure the success of the vegetation cover.
