University of Basra Organizes a Field Trip to the Al-Najibiyah Power Plant

The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a

field trip to the Al-Najibiyah Power Plant

The purpose of the trip was to study the plant’s impact on the aquatic ecosystem in the Shatt al-Arab and the Karma Ali Canal.

The trip, conducted by a number of researchers

from the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra, included measuring physical and chemical variables such as temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen (which drops sharply in the discharge area).

Samples were collected for the purpose of analyzing nutrients and assessing biota (algae) to study the impact of these variables on the abundance and distribution of algae and to determine the extent of the plant’s impact on water characteristics.
