University of Basra Organizes Scientific Workshop on Green Biotechnology
The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a workshop titled “Green Biotechnology: Innovative Solutions to Environmental and Pollution Problems.”
The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the applications of green biotechnology in addressing environmental issues and to enhance their ability to employ innovative biological solutions to reduce pollution and achieve environmental sustainability.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Buthaina Mahdi Younis, included a definition of green biotechnology and its applications in environmental protection, an explanation of the differences between green and traditional biotechnology, and a review of the most important innovative applications for addressing pollution, including bioremediation and waste management—such as converting organic and agricultural waste into bioenergy or biofertilizers, producing biodegradable plastics as an environmentally friendly alternative while reducing industrial pollution, injecting biological enzymes to treat industrial wastewater before discharge, and using biological alternatives to harmful chemicals in industrial processes, with reference to laws and ethical guidelines regarding genetically modified organisms and technology transfer to developing communities.
