The University of Basra Organizes a Field Trip to Mount Sanam in the Safwan District
A scientific team from the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a field trip to Mount Sanam
The trip aimed to conduct a specialized geological study to understand rock strata, analyze phenomena such as erosion and sedimentation, collect rock samples, and record measurements.
The scientific team, consisting of Dr. Hassan Khalil Hassan, Dr. Ayman Abdul-Latif Kweis, and Dr. Rafid Nouri Rajab, highlighted the importance of understanding the region’s geological history and utilizing the mountain as an “open-air field laboratory” that exposes rocks from depths exceeding 5 kilometers. The team also called for the site to be designated a national geopark to protect it from urban sprawl and defacement.
