The University of Basra Organizes a Workshop on the Basics of Collecting Water Samples in Channels with Variable Discharge

The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a scientific workshop titled “Fundamentals of Water Sampling in Channels with Variable Discharge”

The workshop aimed to enable participants to collect representative and reliable water samples from channels with variable discharge (such as seasonal rivers and irrigation canals), ensuring the accuracy of analytical results despite the instability of flow velocity and water levels.

The workshop, presented by Prof. Abdul Zahra Abdul Rasul Al-Halo, covered the challenges of variable discharge and its impact on the distribution of pollutants and sediments.

It also addressed how to design a sampling plan (determining locations, depths, and sampling intervals) using integrated (composite) and point-source sampling devices, and discussed calibration techniques based on changes in flow velocity and water level (such as multipoint measurement), as well as procedures for the preservation, documentation, and transport of samples to ensure their integrity.
