The University of Basra Organizes an Awareness Seminar on Combating Violent Extremism

The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra organized a seminar titled “The Role of Institutions in Protecting Society from Extremist Ideology”

The seminar aimed primarily to raise community awareness of the dangers of extremism and to fortify individuals (especially youth) intellectually by promoting values of tolerance and moderation, in addition to activating the preventive role of educational, religious, and media institutions in formulating joint strategies to curb destructive ideas and combat terrorism.

The session, presented by lecturer Zainab Fadel Al-Tamimi, highlighted mechanisms for preventing extremism, explained the concept of intellectual security, and focused on fortifying the university community—both intellectually and behaviorally—against extremist rhetoric. It also outlined the responsibilities entrusted to educational, security, and religious institutions in spreading moderate thought and fostering a spirit of citizenship while promoting values of coexistence and tolerance, rejecting hatred, and emphasizing the importance of dialogue as a key tool for unity and peace.

Focusing on combating extremism by monitoring and analyzing its activities, presenting an alternative narrative in the media and on social media, and strengthening coordination among various relevant institutions (governmental, civil, and security) to develop integrated preventive policies, in addition to discussing the psychological and social factors leading to extremism and providing appropriate interventions for vulnerable groups.
