A faculty member at the Marine Science Center earns a Ph.D.

Rana Tariq Shibli, a lecturer at the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra, received her Ph.D. from the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Department of Chemistry, at the University of Basra, following the defense of her dissertation titled *Quantification of Certain Environmental Pollutants Using a Locally Manufactured Microfluidic System*

The study involved the design of a system consisting of a microchannel chip and the use of microcontrollers to regulate its operation and flow rate. Its ability to measure the concentrations of certain pollutants, such as nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate, with high efficiency was tested using water samples selected along the Shatt al-Arab River in Basra Governorate. Consequently, the study concluded that the laboratory-designed system is economical due to its low consumption of samples and reagents, and environmentally friendly due to its minimal waste output. It represents a viable alternative compared to traditional methods used in , highlighting the efficiency and reliability of the proposed approach.

The thesis was accepted with honors.
