Basra University contributes to enriching the scientific databases of the FAO

Researchers from the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra have included their scientific research entitled “Preliminary Assessment of Mitochondrial Genetic Diversity in Grouper Species in Iraqi Marine Waters in the Arabian Gulf” in the International Agricultural Science and Technology Information System (AGRIS), the global platform for scientific information and agricultural technology managed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

This research was included as part of efforts to disseminate scientific knowledge about the genetic diversity of marine organisms in the Iraqi marine environment, in the Iraqi Journal of Aquaculture, Volume 23, Issue 1, 2026.

The AGRIS database is one of the most important global bibliographic information systems in the fields of agriculture, food, and related sciences, providing open access to millions of scientific records from more than 150 countries around the world, which enhances the visibility of Iraqi scientific research at the international level and allows scientists and interested parties to view and benefit from the results.

The research included a preliminary analysis of genetic diversity in the mitochondrial DNA of hamour species, revealing the existence of two distinct genetic groups within the species, which provides important genetic information that may contribute to understanding the genetic composition and biodiversity of these species in the Arabian Gulf.
