My teaching at the Marine Science Center earns me a PhD

Ali Wafiq Ali, a lecturer at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra, obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources, at the University of Basra after defending

his thesis entitled

“Estimating the Levels of Certain Pollutants in the Water, Sediments, and Two Species of Fish in Khor Al-Zubair, Southern Iraq.”

The thesis aimed to assess the environmental situation in Khor Al-Zubair by measuring the levels of a number of pollutants in the water, sediments, and tissues of two species of fish, the green mullet and the mullet.

The study found high levels of petroleum hydrocarbon pollution, as well as a clear accumulation of heavy elements in the water, sediments, and muscles of the fish studied.

The study recommended monitoring industrial and domestic sources of pollution and limiting the discharge of polluted water into water bodies.
