The Marine Science Center at the University of Basra organized a course entitled “The Effects of Oxygen Deficiency in the Southern Marshes: Causes and Remedies.”
The course aimed to provide stakeholders with the knowledge necessary to take effective measures to preserve these unique marsh ecosystems.
The course, lectured by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Jasb Al-Shimmari and Dr. Faleh Musa Jafar, covered environmental causes (such as pollution, lack of drainage, and organic decomposition) and their devastating effects on aquatic life, plant life, and the environment, in addition to identifying sustainable solutions such as improving water management, pollution treatment, and community awareness to preserve this vital ecosystem. Treatments include restoring water flow, removing waste, supporting biological systems, and community awareness by training fishermen and farmers in sustainable practices that reduce environmental pressure on the marshes.
