Dr. Ayman Abdul Latif Kweis, a lecturer at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra, participated as a member and supervisor in the committee discussing the thesis of a graduate student (Master's degree) at the Faculty of Science, Department of Environment, University of Basra (Ali Abbas Fadel), entitled Study of Environmental Factors Affecting the Growth Rates and Survival Rates of Avicennia marina Mangroves Planted on the Shatt al-Arab Coast.
The thesis aimed to evaluate the impact of the physical and chemical properties of the water and soil of Shatt al-Arab and Khor al-Zubair on the successful cultivation of grey mangroves as an environmental indicator for the restoration of coastal systems.
The thesis included an environmental and statistical analysis of the factors affecting growth and survival rates.
It recommended the elimination of sources of pollution on the Shatt al-Arab and Khor al-Zubair coasts and the expansion of mangrove cultivation in the southern part of Shatt al-Arab in the Faw area to support biodiversity and protect the coastal environment.
