Basra University organizes a course on laboratory hazards

The Marine Science Center organized a course entitled “Laboratory Risk Assessment.”

The course aimed to educate laboratory workers about potential risks in the laboratory environment, assess the likelihood and severity of their occurrence, and then implement preventive measures to control or eliminate them. This aims to ensure the safety of employees, operations, and property, and to protect the environment from potential damage such as inhalation of toxic fumes, burns, or explosions.

The course, taught by Dr. Bassam Ashour Rashid, addressed risk assessment in laboratories as a systematic process for identifying potential risks and assessing their likelihood and severity, in order to take the necessary measures to reduce or eliminate them. This includes assessing chemical and biological risks, understanding less obvious risks such as poor ventilation, poor lighting, and psychological stress, as well as identifying any dual-use materials or technologies.
