The Director General of the Marine Science Centre, Prof. Shaker Ghalib Ajil, and several professors and researchers from the Centre participated in the 'First International Scientific Conference of the Al-Salam Centre for Environment, Climate Change and Water', held under the slogan 'The Iraqi Environmental Encyclopedia: Documenting Environmental Heritage for a Sustainable Regional Future". The conference covered the launch of the Iraqi Environmental Encyclopaedia project, which is a comprehensive national effort to document Iraq's environmental heritage across sixteen volumes, each covering a different environmental field.
The conference also addressed the unification of academic and governmental efforts, involving over 150 professors and researchers from various Iraqi universities and scientific institutions. A support team from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Planning, Environment, Water Resources, Health, Agriculture, the Media and Communications Commission, and the Office of Environment and Climate Change in the Advisory Council was also involved, with the aim of achieving knowledge integration between state institutions and the scientific community.
Dr Shaker explained that the Marine Science Centre at the University of Basra contributed to writing and preparing the ninth volume of the Iraqi Environmental Encyclopaedia, dedicated to the Iraqi marine environment.
