Scientific symposium entitled “Scientific Prospects in Geology” at the Marine Science Center, University of Basra

A seminar entitled 'Scientific Prospects in Geology' was held at the University of Basra's Marine Science Centre, in collaboration with the university's Scientific Affairs Department. The seminar was organised as part of efforts to promote environmental awareness and protect the province of Basra from pollution.

The seminar included two lectures. The first lecture was entitled

'How to Deal with the Effects of Regional Dust Storms',

, was given by Professor Mu'taz Abdul-Sattar Muhammad Al-Dabas and addressed the dangers that dust storms pose to the environment. The lecture highlighted the fact that dust storms transmit more than ten thousand types of germs that cause disease.

He also addressed the factors that exacerbate the dust problem in Iraq, such as desertification, loss of vegetation cover and wars. Al-Dabas concluded his talk by stressing the need to preserve the Iraqi environment and promote agriculture, as well as establishing green belt systems to limit the impact of dust storms.

Second lecture: Applications of Radioactive Isotopes in Marine Geology

Presented by Prof. Dr. Saleh Mohammed Awad, this lecture explained the role of oxygen and strontium isotopes in marine geology in reconstructing ancient climates and determining seawater temperatures throughout history. The lecture also touched on how ancient sea depths and coastline locations can be inferred, enhancing our understanding of ocean history and climate change.

Both lectures attracted great interest from the audience, sparking fruitful scientific discussions and opening up new horizons for geological studies in this field in the region.
