The Marine Biology Department at the Marine Science Center held a workshop entitled The Importance of Biotechnology in the Aquatic Environment on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The aim of the workshop, which included four valuable lectures, was to shed light on the role of blue technology in addressing aquatic environment problems and finding economic solutions to improve agricultural production and fish farming, combat diseases, purify water from pollutants, and produce biofuel from marine algae using CRISPR - Cas9 technology and modern genetic engineering methods, taking into account the positive and negative effects of these technologies. At the end of the workshop, recommendations were confirmed that emphasized the need to activate the central laboratory and include and support research team projects between departments in biotechnology specializations within the plan of the Marine Science Center in cooperation with state institutions in order to use these technologies in establishing a gene bank for revival in the marine environment and marshes in Basra Governorate and benefit from marine benthic invertebrates in pharmaceutical fields and expand the horizons of scientific cooperation with researchers in local and international colleges and universities to achieve the sustainable development goals that the ministry seeks to support the scientific process of research centers.
