Researchers from the University of Basra publish a study in an international Vietnamese journal

Researchers at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra, Dr. Ahmed Youssef Hamoud, Dr. Zuhair Ali Abdul Nabi, and Dr. Muhannad Kazem Zahir, published a scientific research entitled (Preparation of magnetic spin nano ferrite CrFe2O4 and its use to remove lead and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions) in the journal Advances in Natural Sciences issued by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

The journal, which has a Scopus classification with an impact factor of 1.7, is concerned with publishing research and studies related to nanotechnology.

The study aimed to conduct a practical application using the prepared surface to remove lead and cadmium ions from seawater samples from two different locations, the first at the eastern breakwater in the Grand Faw Port, and the second at the thirteenth berth of the Khor Al-Zubair oil port.

The research dealt with the preparation of nanoparticles of ferrites (NPs) with the formula (CrFe2O4) by the (sol-gel) method for spontaneous combustion using lemon juice as a surface tension reducing agent and fuel for the reaction, as this method falls within the environmentally friendly green chemistry that is less expensive compared to other methods.

The research identified the nanomaterials using different physical and chemical techniques such as (BET), (FE-SEM), (EDX), (FTIR), (TEM), (XRD) with its diagnosis of the phenomenon of adsorption from aqueous solutions, where it studied the adsorption of lead and cadmium ions on the surface of the prepared nanomaterial in order to obtain a surface that has a high ability to adsorb lead and cadmium ions in order to treat water contaminated with ions of these elements.

The results of the research concluded that the prepared surface can be used on a wide scale to remove pollution with these elements at a high rate and efficiency.
