The Marine Science Center/Department of Sediments and Marine Bottoms at the University of Basra held a training course to train the center's staff on the production and preparation of thin slices.
In cooperation with the lecturers, Assistant Professor Dr. Fahd Mansour Saqr
and Assistant Professor Dr. Basem Hamid Sultan from the College of Science, Department of Earth Science
The aim of the course is to provide students of the University of Basra and other Iraqi universities with advanced staff to manufacture these slices, which are mainly needed by graduate students and researchers in centers and colleges.
The course curriculum focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of preparing thin slices of carbonate rocks using a precise process that includes collecting samples, cutting them, fixing them, grinding them, polishing them, and covering them. This process aims to analyze the mineral composition, study the optical properties, analyze microphases, and identify fossils and microstructures. These goals contribute to enhancing knowledge in the fields of petroleum geology, sedimentology, and environmental geology.
This course is considered the first episode of a series of educational courses in this field that will be opened during this academic year
