A research team from the University of Basrah has successfully cultivated mangrove trees along the Iraqi coast

A scientific team at the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basrah planted mangroves in Khor al-Zubair. The team, with the direct support and guidance of the Director General of the Marine Sciences Center,  Dr. Shaker Ghalib Ajil, undertook this initiative to preserve Iraq’s coastlines. This project represents a unique experiment in Iraq, involving the planting of mangroves along the coastlines and banks of the Shatt al-Arab and Khor al-Z , Shatt al-Basra, and the upcoming project at the Grand Faw Port following an agreement with the Director General of the Iraqi Ports Company. The mangroves will serve as vegetation cover to protect the coasts from erosion and provide shelter for fish and other wildlife, as they are resistant to salt and organic pollution and can adapt to high temperatures.
