Marine Science Center publishes a scientific article entitled *Illuminations on the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands*

Dr. Hoda Kazim Ahmed, Head of the Marine Biology Department at the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basra, published a scientific article entitled

Illuminations on the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in the University Journal of Madad, Issue 90, 2024, which is issued by the Department of Media and Government Communication at the Presidency of the University of Basra.

The article explained that wetlands are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The agreements are part of the United Nations Ecosystem Restoration Programme (2021-2030), which aims to expand the scope of restoration of wetland ecosystems that are vulnerable to degradation, destruction and depletion. The programme includes addressing issues related to the climate change crisis, food and water security, loss of biodiversity and other elements that are an integral part of the Sustainable Development Goals. The topics discussed in most of the conferences held included the importance of sustainable development of wetlands in the green economy, coastal and marine management, ocean health and species conservation. The focus in the last ten years has been on ways to confront climate change and global warming. Iraq is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of these changes. An international conference was recently held in Basra Governorate to find ways to reduce or limit the potential damage from climate change that Iraq is facing.
